One of Downtown Ferndale’s major staples returns for its 12th year of free fun as the DIY Street Fair takes over 9 Mile and Woodward starting this Friday, September 20.

The three day festival features live music, local food trucks, and plenty of unique art from more than 150 talented local artists. Tents and booths will line up down 9 Mile just east of Woodward and will also take over Troy Street behind The WAB and The Loving Touch.

Krista Johnston, director of the DIY Street Fair, said that the fair has always been a place for creative and outside-the-box thinkers to come and be noticed. It started out with a quaint, backyard BBQ feel but has grown into a hometown festival with an edge.

“Ferndale is so unique and is known for its creativeness and inclusiveness. We wanted to create an event that represents that,” Johnston said.

When you have the tools to do it yourself, nothing can stop you from turning your vision into reality. Trailblazer offers advanced storage options for a small SUV that is versatile, powerful, and ready to get the job done

That inclusiveness will be on display as over one-third of this year’s art vendors will be new to the event. The DIY Street Fair highlights local and Midwest based artists by featuring fine art, sculptures, photography, jewelry, glass work, and much more. The event is highlighting talented artists with ‘Vendor Feature’ posts on their Facebook page so guests can get a taste of what’s on display.

Along with the regional artists on display, the street fair will feature an all Metro Detroit-based music lineup. The main headliner, Jr. Jr., takes the stage Friday night with support from After Dark Amusement Park, The True Blue, and The Doozers Band. Other performers throughout the weekend include The Beggars, The Gories, Stone Clover, and The High Strung.

Great art? Check.

Awesome music? Check.

Good food? Absolutely! The DIY Street Fair will have plenty of food trucks set up throughout the fair including Mac Shack, Detroit BBQ Company, Nosh Pit, Shredderz, El Guapo, and many more

There are plenty of reasons to check out this weekend’s DIY Street Fair, but one of the top reasons is for all the fundraising efforts the event takes on local causes. All of the alcohol stations at the event are operated by non-profit volunteers, with all of the tips going directly to their organization. This year’s organizations include Bark Nation, Suck It Suicide, Angel Kisses, and many more.

“Our goal from the beginning was to celebrate people with DIY spirit, and we love having these great organizations at our event,” Johnston said.

With incredible art, talented musicians, mouth-watering food and great causes to support, there are plenty of reasons to check out this weekend’s DIY Street Fair. Admission is free for everyone all weekend long. You can find more information on the event’s website and Facebook page.
